On Friday morning we jump in the car and head for the Hills...Beverly Hills. Where we (or I should say one of us)... leave some money behind.

Our wanderings suddenly interrupted by California State Troopers paving the way for a motorcade containing Vice President Joe Biden. He had just concluded an appearance at the Beverly Wilshire. This motorcade consisted of SUV support vehicles, including serious looking men with loaded weapons pointed out of open windows, motorcycles, disaster trucks. Pretty intense!

In the afternoon we wandered over to the Santa Monica pier and took a ride on the solar power ferris wheel

and the antique merry go round

followed by an old fashioned ice cream sundae served up by this intensely coiffed server

And back at the hotel for dinner, we meet Joan, my old neighbor

Joan and her son, Daniel

Joan is doing very well. She is frail but her wit is still as sharp as a tack. It was so good to see Joan. I totally miss her. But Joan is in the best place possible now, the icy Alaska winters would be too much for our old friend. She is enjoying life in Pasadena, still plays bridge, following politics with a passion and reading voraciously.... but guess what..... no more champagne or wine, no more of her famous martinis! The drink of choice for our old friend.... Lemonade!

Nothing wrong with lemonade! Your friend looks wonderful. I totally love the old merry go round
That looks like a really fun place to spend an afternoon, and your friend Joan looks like someone who would be fun to sip lemonade with! What a great smile she has.
Gorgeous photos of Santa Monica. I never had a desire to go west, but these pictures have changed my mind.
Joan looks very happy. I enjoy lemonade too, but I add a little ZIP to mine!
Joan looks great in the picture. So glad she is doing well in Pasadena.
The gal making the ice cream sundae has a great color on her hair.
Ina in Alaska segues into Ina in Rodeo Drive .
So good to see Joan!!!
CA agrees with you! :)

what a wonderful time you all had!
Joan looks wonderful and so happy so is still doing the things she loves....except the drinking but some things must come to an end! So what did you buy?? A purse...jewelry....shoes?
One can celebrate anything with a tall glass of lemonade. I'm glad you got to spend time with your dear friend, Joan. The red haired coiffed server was a riot. But the MERRY-GO-ROUND had my heart all a flutter. LOVE it. LOVE it. Serious looking men with loaded weapons pointed out of open windows, motorcycles, disaster trucks would be kind of SCARY. Not my idea of a calming trip to Beverly Hills. Glad you had FUN anyway. Take care.
Looks like you had a wonderful time with your friends. That little frail lady us is cute. We send her licks

Wonderful time, it sounds like. Lemonade sounds pretty good. I'm especially fond of strawberry lemonade from Red Robin, but I do like a good glass of wine here and there and some iced tea. Hope you all have fun. Be safe.
JOAN! Joanjoanjoanjoan! It's SO good to see her smiling face. I heart her. And I'm awfully glad to hear that she's doing so good. She looks happy!
What a magical place you went to. Except for the part abouts men with guns. But everything else seems awfully magical...and warm!

Joan looks wonderful and so happy! Lemonade is good stuff!
I know Joan loved seeing you again. Nothing like catching up on all that has been going on. I love lemonade on a hot summer day.
Beautiful photos! My heart skipped a beat at, no more bubbly, but she knows best. Xo
